If you are anything like me your motivation for anything will have peaks and valley’s. Running is a major part of my life now. I enjoy doing it and it enables me to work towards the fitness goals I have for myself. It seems like those two thinks alone would be enough to keep me motivated to stay at it. It is logical that if something is good for you and you enjoy it that you will be able to get yourself to do it. This may not surprise any of you that know me, but I have never been an extremely logical person.
In a perfect world I would be running 3 days during the week and then my group run with Run Richmond on Saturday. I don’t think one time in the last 3 weeks I have ran more than twice in a 7 day period. I want to. I know its good for me, but when the thought of getting up at 5:30am and running when its cold and dark hits me I decide to run after work. If any of you are like me you know after work not only are you tired, but life gets pretty busy. I just haven’t been able to get into a routine that works. I will keep at it, but so far it’s been a struggle this winter.
One thing that I know helps me is having a reason to get running. For me the best reason is a race to work for. That is why I signed up for the Resolution Run last week. This 5 mile race in north Lexington on January 1 is going to give me the motivation to get rid of the excuses and get up and run. I know I can run 5 miles. I do it weekly, but I want to set a 5 mile time this January that is going to push me to work hard when I do the same race next January. My motivation for this run is to keep me from being lazy while preparing for the race next year. I may have a mental disorder or maybe I am more competitive with myself than I am with anybody else in the world.
Signing up for a race may or may not be the thing to get you past the cold, rainy day struggle, but it just might. If you are struggling I encourage you to figure out what motivates you and make it happen. This is the time of year that we eat more, have least daylight and the worst running weather. Everything is working against us right now. If you are struggling to get moving that is understandable. Don’t beat yourself up for it, just do something about it. If you don’t have any ideas what that something should be try my plan and sign up for the Resolution Run.
